‘Mortal Kombat’: Another new movie revealed

by Stewart Cole

On Saturday, the Mortal Kombat The franchise announced another new movie during a panel at New York Comic Con. Fans attending a panel for the upcoming Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind were met with his surprise announcement Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match. According to his report IGNthe film will even feature Joel McHale reprising his role as the voice of Johnny Cage.

Cage Match will be the fourth film in the upcoming Mortal Kombat animated franchise. McHale played Cage Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge in 2020 – the first film of the film. Come back for Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms next year, but it’s not in Snow Blind, which premiered on Saturday. The announcement of his return drew cheers from the comic book crowd, especially as a sign that this animated film series is not slowing down or dying out.

Saturday 8th October was also his 30th anniversary Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole, so it was an auspicious moment overall. While the first two films focused on Johnny Cage, Snow Blind centers around Kenshi (Manny Jacinto) and Kuai Liang (Ron Yuan) trying to fight Kano (David Wenham), who is on a “violent journey to take over Earthrealm.” Even before its premiere, many fans praised it for its change of ensemble cast and emphasis on Kenshi, though some couldn’t help but wonder if it was a bad sign for the series as a whole.

The Mortal Kombat The franchise has soared in recent years with more media like movies than ever before. Post The Scorpion’s Revenge, Warner Bros. Pictures released the live-action film in April 2021. It stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Max Huang, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada. It was successful enough to warrant a script, which was commissioned in January 2022.

Details about this project are still scarce, but it was confirmed that Jeremy Slater will write the script, and he will possibly directed by Simon McQuoid. There’s been some talk of McHale pulling out of the animated franchise in the live-action films to play Cage there as well, but so far that’s just an idea from interviews and fan forums.

The live-action film and the first two animated films are now streaming on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind is available to stream on demand or on DVD and Blu-ray. Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match it is expected to be released sometime in 2023.
