Epic director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is also composing music for his films, is set to release his first independent non-film album. The album contains 12 Ghazals sung by various artists, including Papon, Armaan Malik and Bhansali’s discovery, Shreya Ghosal. Σουκούν is, in the words of the director-composer, his tribute to the great Ghazals.
Says Bhansali, “I grew up listening to Begum Akhtar, Mehdi Haasan, Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh. My album Sukoon is a tribute to all these greats of Ghazal. And yet the compositions and style of the song are not a copy of these great ones. This is a youthful live effort to make Ghazal accessible to millennials. I hope I did it. “
Having listened to the album, I can guarantee the uniqueness of the sound. Ghazal has never sounded so new! This is how it felt when Jagjit Singh broke the mold and shattered all the myths about Ghazal with his 1977 album The Unforgettable.
Visionary that he is, Bhansali gave a new impetus to the Ghazals. The album also features the daughter of veteran singer Suresh Wadkar, Ananya. It has a voice that makes you hear.
Says Bhansali, “I grew up listening to Lataji. To me it is the epitome of what is beautiful in this universe. “I’m looking for a taste of her voice in all my singers, whether it’s Shreya Ghoshal or Ananya Wadekar.”
