Marvel movies continue to be the most popular in the world, both in the box office and in streaming services. Movies from Marvel (both at MCU and others) have been the driving force behind theatrical success this year, and these victories seem to be translating into the world of streaming as Marvel’s fare begins to make its way online. Black Widow became available for purchase on Disney + when it was released earlier this year, but was added to the service’s main roster in October and immediately became the biggest movie in all of streaming.
Nielsen released the streaming charts from the week of October 18-24 and Black Widow was the top movie on the internet for that period. According to Nielsen, Black Widow aired for a total of 269 million minutes this week, surpassing all other Disney + movies as well as all Netflix promotions. Abra CatabraAlso on Disney +, it came second for the week, which makes sense given it was just before Halloween.
Every new title from Marvel Studios dominates the streaming space once it hits Disney + and Black Widow it certainly was not something different. In a few weeks, expect to see even bigger numbers for Sang-Chiits debut in flow. Different Black Widow, Sang-Chi was not part of the Disney + Premier Access program, so his arrival on Disney + Day was really his first broadcast anywhere. Hawkeye it will definitely be another huge success for the streamer when it premieres later this month.
Black Widow served as a swan song to Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha at MCU, having been with the franchise since 2010 and eventually sacrificing herself to acquire Soul Stone at Avengers: Endgame. It also serves as a torchbearer, creating Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) with a future at MCU.
“First of all, I think when I got on there was not even a discussion about whether there would be this scene or that scene or a future Yelena,” Pugh told ComicBook.com. “It was just like ‘Come on in, stick in.’ And I was so grateful that they invited me. Going forward, I think the most wonderful and scary thing is that, obviously, I have big shoes to fill. It was really wonderful to see all the ways in which Scarlett’s talk changed her character. And I think for me, whatever the future is, I would very much like, I guess, to follow in her footsteps this way. How do we make Yelena different, how do we make her stand out? How do we make it strong? And this will be an ongoing, I hope, debate. Yes, I guess I will follow in Scarlett’s footsteps this way, changing him. “
