Netflix

NFLX
has just released her new aspiring film, The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña and Catherine Keener. Directed by Shawn Levy, just two years after his last film Free Press also starring Reynolds, The Adam Project has been on the streaming platform since March 11 and has already been received by some critics, though it is sure to excite the public.

The Adam Project has all the nostalgic charm of the movies to which it refers, ie Back to the Future and ET the Alienas Star Wars and of course, 13 Continued on 30. But behind these references, or tributes, lies a sci-fi movie full of action, full of humor and emotion, though at times overly emotional, about grief, the father-son relationship, and everyone’s relationship with themselves.

The Adam Project sees Ryan Reynolds play Ryan Reynolds as a pilot named Adam Reed, who meets his 12-year-old as he travels through time until 2022. Walker Scobell plays the 12-year-old version of Ryan Reynolds, here named Adam, in quite convincing performance, capturing the annoying / witty (depending on your mood or taste) Reynolds jokes. Young Adam is bullied and expelled from school regularly, much to the disappointment of his mother (played by the great Jennifer Garner), who begs the school principal to pity her son after he lost his father less than a year ago. a year. After asking his younger self his age, middle-aged Adam sees that he traveled in the wrong year. It was supposed to go in 2018, but somehow it ended up in 2022.

The Adam Project unfolds silently. The beginning of the film never reveals the real reasons why Adam travels in the past or why he comes in contact with his younger self (something that is strictly forbidden in the book of rules for time travel). The opening sequence shows Adam in 2050 being chased and shot by another plane before flying into a wormhole, but the reasons for this are not explained much later in the film. Only when he finds his wife, Laura (played by Zoe Saldaña), or rather when he finds her, does it become clear that she was the one Adam was looking for. When he finds Laura, Adam (and consequently the spectators) discovers the real reason why he should have traveled back to 2018: to meet his late father, Louis Reed (played by Mark Raffaello) and save the world by a power- and money-thirsty criminal, Maya Sorian (played by Kathryn Keener).

Although the film flows silently, its narrative seems to pull in multiple directions. This is the story of a man who reconnects with his younger self, searches for his missing wife (the “love of his life”), corrects his past misconduct towards a mourning mother, or meets his dead father on the occasion of say a final goodbye? The Adam Project is all of the above, which means that none of them are explored with real depth, leading to some superficial clichés about love and sadness.

One of the great things about this movie is the interaction between Adam and his younger self. Reynolds and Skobel form a wonderful duo, pulling each other with sarcastic sideways comments. There is a lot of chemistry between the two actors. There is a feeling that both the young Adam and the older Adam need each other to mourn the death of their father, Louis. The presence of Mark Ruffalo adds another layer to the duo. The roles seem to be reversed when the two Adam finally meet Louis. The annoying younger Adam suddenly becomes wiser and more understanding than his older self.

The principle that the historical timeline should not be altered is repeated many times throughout the film. This is the rule established by movies like Back to the Future about time travel. But what is the meaning of time travel if one of its fundamental rules is that the future must not change? Why travel back in time if you could not save a loved one from death? The Adam ProjectHis top conclusion will suggest that there is no point in traveling through time other than contemplating the past of one’s life.

The Adam Project is a fun movie to watch with the whole family and has the potential to become Netflix’s next big hit. The film topped Netflix’s Top 10 charts in all countries worldwide a day after its release on the platform.
