New movie in the works at Paramount shooting before 2009 film – The Hollywood Reporter

After years of stops and starts, Paramount is taking a step toward a comeback Star Trek on the big screen. Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of it Star Wars series Andorwill direct a new feature, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing.

The plot is said to take place decades before the events of 2009 Star Trek, which JJ Abrams had. Abrams' evil robot will produce the film, which the studio describes as an extension of it Journey universe.

Journey has largely lived in the world of television and streaming in recent years, with Paramount+ hosting a number of shows including Strange new worlds, Discoverythe animated Lower Decks and Picardwhich wrapped last year.

Star Trek Beyondthe most recent Journey film, hit theaters in 2016 and starred Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, the role he first played in 2009 Star Trek. Also starring Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin. Paramount is still developing a fourth Star Trek to play this cast and be described as the final chapter for this crew.

Paramount spent years trying to find a new look for the big screen Star Trek after Beyond it was soft at the checkout. In 2016, the studio announced a Star Trek 4 to star Chris Hemsworth (who played Kirk's father in the 2009 film) along with the crew of Pine's Enterprise. That film never came to fruition, and directors like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley took stabs at developing their own unrelated takes. During a Paramount investor day in February 2022, producer Abrams teased that a new installment was in the works with a Pine-led crew and would shoot by the end of the year, a move that surprised even the cast WandaVision'Matt Shakman was set to direct, but left in August 2022 to take over The fantastic four for Marvel Studios.

Smith, known as its author Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the writer behind features like The Lego Batman Movierepped by WME and attorneys PJ Shapiro and Wendy Kirk.

This would mark the first feature for Haynes, who rode the darkness, celebrated Star Trek-inspired episode of Black Mirror, “USS Callister.” He is repped by WME and attorney Peter Nelson.
