Devdatta has worked in Marathi TV shows and is known for his role as Lord Khandoba in the Marathi serial Jai Malhar. He had made his Bollywood debut with Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara in 2013 and had also appeared in the 2018 film Satyameva Jayate. He had played the role of Suryaji Malusare in Om Raut’s previous blockbuster Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.

Adipurush will star in Devdatta Nage as Hanuman.

Touted as a film celebrating “the victory of good over evil”, the multilingual period epic Adipurush is a screen adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana. The poster released on Ram Navmi featured Prabhas and Sunny carrying bows and arrows, wearing armor and dressed in dhoti. Kriti appeared in a simple saree with her head covered, while Devdatta was seen in a sideways pose as she bowed down at the service of the trio. “Mantron se badhke tera naam Jai Shri Ram (Your name is greater than any mantra),” the post was captioned.

Adipurush had earlier courted controversy, including calls for a boycott, when many objected to the depiction of Hindu deities and subpar visual effects in the big-budget film’s teaser released in October. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters on August 11, 2022, but the release date was further pushed back to January 12, 2023. It is now slated to hit screens in 3D on June 16 this year.

Speaking the same, Om Raut had said in an interview to India Today, “We have not done anything wrong in this film. People are doing a few things wrong here. With this film, we want to present the story of Lord Ram to the world. We want to spread his teachings to the youth. If we represent it in a way that we can reach the new generation, then only we can speak to the new generation. Is there less faith in it because of that? No. We have preserved the sanctity of everything.”
