Niagara Falls will be lit up in blue to mark the release of city director James Cameron’s new film ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’.

A special trailer show for the much-anticipated sequel saw Niagara Falls lit up in bright blue yesterday (November 2).

Hollywood director James Cameron, a Niagara Falls native who grew up in the Chippawa neighborhood, announced via Twitter that the falls will be lit up as a backdrop for a sneak peek of the worldwide movie “Avatar: The Way Of Water.” – widely on December 16.

The announcement was greeted with much excitement by Mayor Jim Diodati, who immediately tweeted:Congratulations to our Niagara Falls Hometown boy Jim Cameron for the release of his new movie Avatar: The Way of Water. See the film in cinemas from Friday 16 December… It’s going to be epic!”.

Cameron, of course, rose to fame after directing “The Terminator” in 1984 and followed it up with blockbusters-after-blockbusters, culminating in the international sensation “Titanic” in 1997 and then “Avatar” in 2009. The latter is still atop the throne of best-selling film with sales of $2.9 billion.

“Titanic” was the third highest-grossing film of all time with $2.2 billion in sales. (For the record, “Avengers: Endgame” was second with $2.8 billion.)

Apparently, the ‘Avatar’ sequel was previously written by Cameron and his team in 2018, before the director decided it was substandard and threw it in the bin.

Cameron said he and his team came to that conclusion. “All films work on different levels. The first is the surface, which is the character, the problem, and the resolution. The second is thematic. What is the movie trying to say? But ‘Avatar’ also operates on a third level, the subconscious.”

“I wrote a whole script for the sequel, read it and realized it didn’t make it to the third level. Antenna. Again from the begining. That lasted a year.”

He then sat down and wrote a brand new sequel ‘The Way Of Water’. Here’s Cameron’s announcement on Twitter yesterday.
