Dune, PG-13
Few films justify the word spectacular enough as this shocking 155-minute science fiction epic set in Arrakis, a more spectacular desert world than Luke Skywalker has ever seen. Its vast dunes resemble those of Lawrence of Arabia, which are patrolled only by glowing, glowing sandworms, with helicopters resembling eight-winged dragonflies humming from above. There is a beautiful intergenerational atmosphere between the world treasurer, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) and his son Paul (Timothy Salame), ambiguously blessed with supernatural gifts. The fat Jabba-the-Hutt bad Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård, 70) gets a Brando-like entry in revelation now. As ruthless plausibility, the Most Reverend Mother Mojiam, who tests Paul’s mystical ability, 75-year-old Charlotte Rampling, is the icy coolness itself. The mysterious story takes its own sweet time, and sometimes you wish it would stop and get Paul to lead the desolate Stigar tribe (Javier Bardem, 52) against evil, already. But it is dark, dark, intentional as a funeral procession, it haunts. You wonder if it will ever end, and then you get upset that you can not immediately see the sequel. – ΤΑ,
