There are a lot of very unhappy creators and fans today, as Disney+ has released a list of more than four dozen movies and TV shows that will be pulled from the streaming service next week…
During Disney+’s recent Upfront presentation earlier this week, it was revealed that the streamer is in the process of “overview of our DTC content [direct-to-consumer] services to align with strategic changes in our approach to content curation.”
You might need a business degree to figure this out, but the bottom line is that the company decided to remove content from Disney+ starting May 26 in order to save money.
The company will take a write-down in the June quarter of $1.5 billion – $1.8 billion by removing content from its streaming platforms. From there, Disney can exclude the value of that content from its balance sheet, preventing it from being reported as an expense in subsequent reporting periods.
Apparently, Disney will consider uploading some of these movies and TV shows to other streamers, but they will soon be gone and not legally available to watch.
The biggest shock is Willow treea small-screen sequel to the cult classic, which was canceled after one season due to poor reviews (the door was said to be open to more episodes in the series, though that has now been closed).
