The Movie, Clerks III + More

by Stewart Cole

Looking for a 90s nostalgia hit? You’re lucky! This week’s new movies on VOD include; Clerks III, which brings back some of the most iconic characters in Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse and has them make, what else? An indie film about working in a video store. If that’s all a bit meta-meta, check out one of the many horror films coming out this week, including Spirit Halloween: The Moviewhich is exactly what the title says it is, or maybe try an indie horror film like Old man.

The new thriller, which has nothing to do with the Jeff Bridges TV series The old manstars AvatarStephen Lang is a man who lives in an isolated cabin until one day, a lost hiker named Joe (Mark Sender) comes to him for help. As an old man, Lang is menacing and creepy, but he’s also wary that Joe is there to hurt him. Is either of these men a danger to the other or are they both just a little paranoid? That’s the real question here, and you’ll know the answer by the end.

These are just some of the titles available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube and through your cable service this week. See what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Kevin Smith’s 1994 film Secretaries it is a perfect encapsulation of its time. The indie film about a pair of video store clerks, Dante and Randal (Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson) is a cult classic, partly because of the film itself and the memorable (and dirty) script, and partly because lesson around its incredibly low-budget production. Clerks III is less a continuation of the Secretaries franchise and more of a meta tribute to the original film. In this new film, Randall, having suffered a heart attack, wants to make a low-budget independent film about his life working in a video store, like Smith did, and many of the film’s details and plot points are sly references to the way this original film was made – the biggest difference here is the fact that, unlike the original film, this new film is full of Hollywood stars making cameos throughout.

I’m pretty sure its plot Spirit Halloween: The Movie is it the biggest case for a movie ever; three young friends get trapped inside a Spirit Halloween shop and while inside, a malevolent spirit animates all the animatronic characters to terrorize them. (I should note that the movie was actually made by the people who run the Spirit Halloween stores, and I’m glad to see that they’re fully embracing animatronic-induced terror.) Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, is one of stars and is joined by Rachael Leigh Cook and Marla Gibbs. And the running time is 81 minutes. Literally every square on the “what do I want from a movie” bingo card is checked.
