A total of four DC Comics films are scheduled to be released in 2023. Among them, The Flash, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2 and Blue Beetle are at the center of the controversy. A lot will change depending on the projects of James Gunn and Peter Saffron, who become the heads of DC Studio, but since these are not works in which the two people have been involved, it is very likely that they will will take place without much influence. We do not yet know what DC will show by regaining its momentum while Marvel is lagging behind.
The 2023 DC films begin with Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods, scheduled for release on March 17, 2023 in North America. Although it did not receive many positive reviews in countries outside of North America, production of a sequel has been confirmed and filming has been completed and is about to be released.
It’s the story of Billy Batson and his family becoming more confident in their powers and acting like superheroes. It’s a story that unfolds as the characters of Hespera (Helen Mirren), Calypso (Lucy Liu), and Rachel Ziegler, another of Calypso’s companions, appear. We currently know that Wonder Woman will make an appearance.
The Flash elevates the film’s status more through the criminal activities of its lead actors than through the content of the film itself. It is scheduled for release on June 16, 2023 in North America and is an adaptation of Flash Point from the original comic book. This work begins the DC Multiverse, stars General Zod Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batman, and introduces Supergirl.
The trailer is expected to premiere during the Super Bowl in February 2023, and it was recently reported in various foreign media that the Superman and Wonder Woman cameo videos have been removed.
The Blue Beetle, which will be featured in a live-action film for the first time, is scheduled for release on August 18, 2023. It is the first DC film to feature a Latino character as the main character, starring teenager Jaime Reyes played by Solo Mariduena. Details on how the live-action film will adapt the story of Dan Garrett acquiring the Beetle that transforms into the Blue Beetle and fighting the bad guys are not known.
It was developed as an HBO Max original film, but later changed direction and was adapted theatrically. It hasn’t yet been revealed how closely it is tied to the DCU universe.
Aquaman 2is set to be released in North America on December 25, 2023. Director James Wan is once again at the helm, and many of the actors from the previous films, including Jason Momoa, appear. Reportedly to include a Ben Affleck Batman cameo, Aquaman 2 would be the last DCU film before the James Gunn and Peter Saffron era. Like The Flash, Amber Heard as Mera received more attention for the poor direction than the film’s content.
