‘Barbarella’ starring Sidney Sweeney Lands directed by Edgar Wright

EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of her latest Sony picture Anyone but you the studio is wasting no time staying in Sydney Sweeney’s business, as sources tell Deadline Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in negotiations to write a new Barbarella photo starring Sweeney with Edgar Wright in talks to direct. The film is still a work in progress, given Sweeney and Wright’s busy schedule in preparation The Running Man reboot starring Glen Powell, so the project won’t be next for either.

Even so, Goldman and Ross reportedly wrote it clearly shows that the studio isn’t scrambling to get the movie right as they see this as a big franchise for all parties. Goldman helped launch such successful franchises as the rebooted X Men films starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as well as Matthew Vaughn The Kingsmen: Secret Service.

Wright had been eyeing the project for some time, having a meeting with Sweeney soon after the first announcement, but only committed to developing the project as something he would potentially direct. The studio and Wright have strong ties that go back to his box office success baby guide, And the tone that Sony and Sweeney are going for with this project is in keeping with the fun and creative visual style that the director is known for.

Not much is known about this version, but the 1968 picture directed by Roger Vadim follows an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back to galaxy. The film wasn’t a huge box office hit, but it has since become a cult classic, and in 2020 the Forest estate announced plans for a new film.

This latest development with Barbarella comes after Sweeney and Glen Powell’s romcom Anyone but you grossly outperforming at the box-office. The film grossed $210 million at the worldwide box office on a $30 million budget and
