Singer-actor Gippy Grewal has now spoken about the controversy surrounding him “The Punjaban Song” in Jugjugg Jeeyo starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. The song with the original name “Nach Punjaban”, sang Abrar Ul Haq who had claimed that he had not given rights to Dharma Productions. Meanwhile, Gippy Grewal claims that he was told by music composer Tanishk Bagchi that his vocals were not used at all only for the singer to learn that the entire trailer was cut around his vocals.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood HungamaGippy Grewal said he was asked for the track.The Punjaban Song which was heavily used in Jugjugg Jeeyo and during promotions as well. He said he would listen to the music, record it and send it. “They sent me saying ‘You sing this song!’ They said, “Lord, you will sing this song,”Nach Punjaban’?’ I said, “I’ll listen to it and if my vocals fit, I’ll sing it!” So I heard the track, recorded it and sent it to them. No one called me for three months. So I assumed that no one liked my vocals and didn’t use them. One day I saw the poster that said the trailer will be released tomorrow. So I texted their music director Tanishk Bagchi if his vocals had been used and he said “No, it was Dharma’s call”. I said, “Okay! No problem and good luck. We’ll do something next time. The next day the trailer came out and I didn’t see it because I thought my song wasn’t featured in it so I wasn’t interested. My brother called me from Australia and said “you sang well, didn’t you tell me?”. And I said, “Where did you hear my song?” He said your vocals are in the trailer. So when I searched for the trailer, the entire trailer was cut around my vocals.”
Gippy Grewal was rather surprised that the music director was not aware of it and that the singer was not informed either. He then texted Tanishk to tell the makers not to use his vocals as he was no longer in the mood to do the song. “Apparently they had used it and they called me and tried to explain. All their promotion was based on the song, no one said who sang it. I don’t know what kind of competition they had.”
Gippy Grewal also said that he felt even more uncomfortable after singer Abrar Ul Haq, who sang the original track, took to Twitter saying that he had not given the rights of the song to Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. His tweet read, “I did not sell my song ‘Nach Punjaban’ to any Indian film and I reserve the right to go to court to claim compensation. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song to copy and it won’t be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.”
When he saw the tweet, Gippy thought: “I was hooked. I realized that this is Abrar’s song and they took away the rights to it—and I’ve grown up listening to him and have a lot of respect for him. And I hadn’t signed any deal, and I got a nice call from Azeemji at Dharma Productions and so I signed. He told me about the check and I explained that it’s not about the money, and please don’t do that. If I had to do it for money, I would have said so before sending my vocals. But please don’t do these things. I don’t understand these…”
