Bollywood Gehraiyaan’s upcoming film has piqued the interest of many moviegoers in portraying modern-day romantic relationships. But one of the things that has really started a discussion on social media has to do with the accolades given to director’s intimacy with director Shakun Batra. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa and will be released on Amazon Prime Video on February 11.
Earlier this week, the movie’s characters’ posters were released, referring to intimacy director Dar Gai. The intimacy directors coordinate between actors and directors to choreograph safe and consensual intimate scenes into films. The profession gained more recognition after the MeToo movement, where several female actors appeared with their unpleasant experiences to deal with sexual harassment in the workplace.
Writer Aseem Chhabra shared a tweet on Thursday speculating that Gehraiyaan may be the first film to include and crediting an intimate director to the film. Aseem wrote on Twitter: “I may be wrong, but this is the first time I have seen the praise for an ‘Intimacy Director’ in an Indian film (or any other film)? “I know Dar Gai and I’m really curious about her contribution to this film.”

Responding to Aseem’s tweet, Intimacy designer and actress Neha Vyas commented: “I also think the first production company to certify an IC in their film was the Jugaad films founded by Dar and Dheer for their short film Closure . It was released last year. ” Originally from Ukraine, Dar coordinated and guided the actors in Gehraiyaan during the filming of intimacy scenes.

Applauding the film for including an intimate director, another artist commented: “It makes me so happy! It’s one of my favorite New York City roles to play – whenever there is a chance of nudity or any sexual mimicry. It is very encouraging to see Bollywood moving in this direction as well. “Intimacy coordinators are the best.”

According to The Boston Globe, the moderators and directors of the intimacy were officially introduced in Hollywood in 2016. Three women with backgrounds as race directors founded Intimacy Directors International, the first association in the field that is still in its infancy. Providing an overview of their job description, intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot told The Boston Globe: “Before these professionals existed, many intimacy scenes were random and depended on the decency of the actors and directors involved.”
