Guillermo del Toro invites the Academy because it did not broadcast live eight craft categories at the 94th Oscars: “We do not make films alone, we do them together”

Guillermo del Toro did not pull a punch while discussing the latest controversy surrounding the 94th Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced last week that eight craft classes will be filmed one hour before the Oscars live and will be edited “flawlessly” in the live broadcast.

The move had its share of critics, one of whom was the two-time Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro, who spoke on the decision while receiving the Filmmaking Achievement Award at the Hollywood Critics Association Awards on Monday.

“If any year was the year to think about, this was not the year to not hear their names live at the Oscars. “This is the year we have to say it – and say it out loud,” he added as the crowd applauded.

He then spoke to those who might have more influence than he did, urging them to use their voice and correct this mistake.

“Many of you who have a voice and can say it should say, ‘We must not do this,'” del Toro added.

He admitted that he should not, “they never do”, however, this year we are together in it. “Art is good.”

“Every time we say something we invoke a whole reality with it and we have to say that this, 2021, was a great year for movies,” he concluded.

All eight of these winners will have their full speeches screened, though other times will be processed in an effort to keep the show under three hours.

The move comes a year after the worst performance of the Oscars in history, attracting just 10.4 million viewers.

The Academy announced in August 2018 that it would not broadcast live some of the winners, but the news was met with such an immediate reaction that it was quickly abandoned.
