Langford Film Studios pass first reading and proceed to public audition

by Stewart Cole

A new project in Langford that would see the development of two new film studios could start production as early as June.

The Langford Council approved a first reading of the project, which includes two 20,000-square-foot film studios.

It’s all part of it Langford Heights development, proposed by Strand Properties and Bastion Development.

The application from Strand and Bastion says that the film studios will bring economic activity to the city.

“Film users are an economic driver for communities and require high levels of workforce per square foot of employment,” the app said. “Many of these employees want to live close to their jobs.”

For now, it only exists a movie studio on South Island, in Parksvilleand has been fully retained until January 2024.

Lillian Szpak, a Langford councilor, says this would be a great addition to the community.

“We think the game is changing for Langford in a way, he’s a great employer,” Szpak said. “We probably have people here in Langford now who could work through a sound studio.”

The film studios are part of the development being built on the land where Westshore Speedway is currently located, but the film studios will be built next to the racetrack.

The highway was put up for sale in March 2020, which provoked reactions in the community.

The development goes to a public hearing on May 6.
