While not much is known Martin ScorseseThe planned new Jesus movie about Jesus, the director talked a little about when he plans to start shooting part of the project.
Talking to you America Magazine recently, Scorsese was asked about his new film and why he wants to make another Jesus film after the 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ. Scorsese said that a conversation he had with Pope Francis made him think about how to present Jesus in a modern setting and that he hopes to start shooting the film soon.
“I think in response to what Pope Francis wrote and the idea of making Jesus accessible, not putting Jesus on a wall or a painting or a stained glass window,” Scorsese said. “Jesus right now, with us now, right in the room as we speak. And we deal with the accessibility of who Jesus is and continues to be in our lives. As such, I'm thinking of a movie that might be part modern, part ancient, I'm not sure. We have come up with a script, me and [longtime collaborator] Kent Jones. I'm hoping to shoot some of that in April to get it going.”
The film will not be a “normal, straight telling” of the life of Jesus
Scorsese went on to say that his film would not be a “conventional, straight narrative” version of the life of Jesus, saying that some of it would be based on Shūsaku Endō's book A Life of Jesus, which deals with the figure of Jesus. and how it relates to people's lives today.
“But it wasn't going to be an ordinary, straight-forward account of the life of Jesus by any means,” Scorsese said. “It would be something that makes us think of Jesus in the present. And in a different way. Some of this would be based on what Shūsaku Endō wrote in his book A Life of Jesus. I thought it was very interesting how he does it from an Asian perspective to make us see Jesus in a different way and how it relates to our lives now. And how it will always be something at the center of our lives.”
Scorsese, who already made The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, announced that he would make a new film about Jesus Christ in May 2023 after he and his wife Ellen Morris met privately with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
In October 2023, Scorsese also confirmed this Sight and Sound that the film would not have a simple narrative.
