‘Super Mario Bros Movie’ sets a strange new record at the Box Office

Rotten Tomatoes has become one of the main reasons people go or don’t see a movie. The review aggregator site references practically every movie, giving said movies either a “Rotten” or “Certified Fresh” rating from the critics who rate them. The critics gave it Super Mario Bros. Movie a “Rotten” score, but that didn’t stop the film from achieving a huge and strange box office record.

The film has lit up the box office since its release on April 5. Despite critics not being fair with their reviews, fans have fallen in love with Chris Pratt’s video game adaptation. It has a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s not to say that it has made a staggering $1.238 billion at the box office and is set to pass Incredibles 2 as the fourth highest-grossing animated film.

The video game adaptation could also be one of the main reasons why Disney will never return to the top of the animation battle. Simply put, Illumination has found a winning combination that will be replicated moving forward.

Despite the aforementioned “Rotten” characterization, the Super Mario Bros. Movie it also achieved a record that put it above all other “Rotten” movies on the aggregator site.

In addition to the Super Mario Bros. movie that led to the top-grossing animated film in history, it can now have bragging rights as the The highest grossing film ‘Rotten’ in domestic box office history. The $9.80 million added to the weekend domestic numbers took it to $549.29. That was enough to beat The Lion King remake, which also has a 52% “Rotten” rating.

Although there has been some noticeable slowdown in the film’s box office earnings, especially with the domestic release, the Illumination giant is still pulling in the numbers. It could beat out Incredibles 2 and Frozen 2 for the third highest-grossing animated film.
