Sharpen those pitchforks, because My bloody Valentine returns. The 80s slasher franchise has been around for quite some time, dating back to the 3D remake released by Lionsgate in 2009. Now, we know that the folks at Blumhouse Productions are gearing up to make a brand new film in the series. This, according to the people at Bloody Disgustingwho were the first to report the news.
Unfortunately, details are scarce at this time. There’s no word on who might be in the director’s chair, nor is it clear who’s writing the script. It’s also unclear if this would be a reboot of some sort or if it would be a legacy sequel that would keep the original film intact going forward. But this certainly feels like something in Blumhouse’s wheelhouse, as the studio is not only the number one name in horror right now, but they’ve also revived several franchises in recent years. Mainly David Gordon Green Carnival trilogy, which was quite successful.
Directed by Giorgos Michalkas, the original My bloody Valentine released in 1981 during the original Hollywood slasher craze. It was a modest success in its day, but found longevity and a cult following thanks to home video. Finally, Lionsgate resurrected the franchise with My Bloody Valentine 3D in 2009 during the slasher remake craze. This film was quite a hit, grossing more than $100 million at the box office against a budget of $14 million. For those who may need a refresher, the summary is as follows:
“Ten years ago, an inexperienced miner named Tom Hanniger caused an accident that killed five men and put a sixth, Harry Warden, in a coma. A year later, on Valentine’s Day, Harry woke up and murdered 22 people with a pickaxe before dying. Now Tom is back home, still haunted by the past. And something else returns to Harmony: a pickaxe-wielding killer in a miner’s mask, who may be Harry’s ghost, is coming to claim Tom and his friends.”
It sounds like this is early days, but it also feels like something that could come together pretty quickly, under the right circumstances. So stay tuned and we’ll be sure to bring you more details as soon as we get them.
