[이데일리 김은경 기자] Meanwhile, when imagining the city of the future, I thought of the films ‘Back to the Future’ or ‘Ready Player One’. Self-driving cars and flying cars roam downtown, and virtual reality has become a daily occurrence. However, seeing it as just a video, I thought, “Is such a world really going to happen? That didn’t really strike me. That’s like saying older generations didn’t know the world like today would come.

In contrast, SK Telecom’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Experience Center “T.um” was a place that made you feel like you were in the future world 30 years from now. My opinion after the experience “I hope there will be a peaceful world like this instead of a post-apocalyptic era in which humanity is being destroyed by human selfishness.”It was On the 16th, I participated in the T.UM tour at SK Telecom headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul.

Tium opened in September 2008 with a total area of 1,370 square meters (414 pyeong). Until around 2015 it was just a place to display the latest phones and mobile devices, but now it’s an extra-large holographic display with sci-fi elements, a virtual reality (VR) device which even detects the movements of your fingers, and 360 which delivers temperature and vibration, it has turned into an experience room which reproduces the future society in 2052 using drawings and videos.

As we entered the lobby, a large screen mounted on a giant robot arm greeted us. The name of the future town you will encounter through the entrance is ‘Highland’. You have to go through the space control center where the future station is installed.

To get out of the Earth into space, you will need high-speed transport. I boarded a ‘hyperloop’ train traveling at a speed of 1300 km/h. Although the train didn’t actually run at low speed through the planned experience room in the building, the seats swayed and the scenery outside quickly passed so you could only feel the speed. The train, which passed through the atmosphere, thought it would be stable for a while, then encountered space debris and began to shake again. It feels like experiencing 4DX without glasses in an amusement park.

After about 7 minutes of flight, we arrived at the space control center. It is a place that connects earth and space to SK Telecom’s broadband network. Here, the “captain” monitored the impact of changes in the universe on Earth’s environment through an extra-large transparent screen. The screen changed according to the captain’s gestures, and a 360-degree remote video from a network-connected drone came out.

Global environmental monitoring shows that there is a high probability of tornadoes occurring on the Korean Peninsula. However, a sudden alarm sounds like a sudden volcanic eruption in the Colima region of Mexico.

Maybe something is wrong with the Earth. I went all the way to the crater in the Colima Volcanic Zone in Mexico wearing a Head Mounted Display (HMD). Obviously, I feel like I’m getting on a plane even when I’m standing still and wearing only the HMD. Even though you were looking at 360 degrees, surrounded by smoke and volcanoes, it was enough to scare you even though you knew it was virtual reality.

As he got closer to the crater, even the handle he was holding grew hotter. Materials that transmit heat well are said to have been used for an immersive experience. Just when I felt the urge to remove the HMD due to the strain, I found a wild animal left in the burning mountain. To save the deer surrounded by flames, the drone looked for an escape route and started spraying water. Watching the deer escape following the drone brings a sigh of relief.

When they came to save the animals, to make matters worse, they said meteorite fragments were flying towards Earth. In a meeting with experts, they decided to generate a gravitational field to change the direction of the meteorite. They took the space shuttle back to Earth and traveled to the underwater city of “Highland”.

He was in a hurry to save Earth, but in the meantime he found a survivor who had been damaged by a tornado. The survivors were quickly rescued and emergency surgery was performed. In 2052, it was a world where artificial intelligence (AI) could verify personal biometric information, provide personalized health information, and secure patient health through three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. I directly experienced remote surgery using a haptic transmission device. The patient’s bones were tied and the surface was polished to a smooth surface. I felt a slight tremor at my fingertips.

Now that we’ve saved the survivors, it’s time to save the planet again. I put the HMD back and sat in the cockpit. Like Tony Stark, the protagonist of the movie “Iron Man”, he fired a laser with his hand and generated a gravitational field to send the asteroid into a safe orbit.

After completing all the missions, I got into the self-driving car with the Expedition Team and looked around Highland. In Highland, self-driving cars that don’t require a driver can move around safely and comfortably by being connected to a citywide network. Robots that take over human tasks and AI assistants that assist humanity quickly and accurately in emergency situations have been enough to predict the future of technologies and services that are now in their infancy.

In the artificial climate management center, the entire planet shared and resolved social agendas while adjusting the weather, and people used the metaverse to overcome spatial constraints. The “vertical farm”, which solves human food problems through advanced agricultural technology, and clean infrastructure that does not emit greenhouse gases are also applied.

The crisis caused by climate change is felt badly on a daily basis, but it is becoming more and more serious. Still, it’s nice to insert a plastic straw rather than a wet paper straw, and it’s true that washing and transporting the cup is still cumbersome.

The high level of immersion in the SK Telecom Experience Center is due to the fact that there was a solid storyline rather than boasting about technology. Fun also teaches lessons on the basics, pollution and climate change and more. Therefore, the more realistic the experience, the greater the problem and severity of climate change. He also points out that technology can help solve this problem.

An SK Telecom official said, “Highland’s appearance is in line with the environmental, social and governance (ESG) management that the company is currently pursuing. It contains Telecom’s philosophy.”
